Awesome and Free Websites

There are millions of websites out there that offer free information, images, books, videos, sound recordings, and much more available on the Internet. Here are five that I think are awesome! Give them a try!

Project Gutenberg

E-books are becoming more and more popular all the time. Project Gutenberg has 36,000 books available that are in the public domain (classics that are hundreds of years old or new books that have been self-published by contemporary authors). These e-books can be read on e-reading devices, such as the Nook or Kindle, or on a computer or tablet.

Library of Congress Digital Collections

The Library of Congress has worked to digitize its most rare collections, and now there is access to photographs, manuscripts, maps, sound recordings (such as presidential speeches and early music), motion pictures (such as silent films of the early 1900s and stage performances), books, and websites. These items could not be seen before, unless you happened to travel to Washington D.C., or could not be seen before do to their condition.

Internet Archive

“The Internet Archive is a…non-profit that was founded to build an Internet library. Its purposes include offering permanent access for researchers, historians, scholars, people with disabilities, and the general public to historical collections that exist in digital format.” The organization “…includes texts, audio, moving images, and software, as well as archived web pages in our collection.” (from their website)

The Commons on Flickr

“The key goals of The Commons on Flickr are to firstly show you hidden treasures in the world’s public photography archives, and secondly to show how your input and knowledge can help make these collections even richer (from their website).” There are thousands and thousands of images from libraries, museums, and other institutions from all over the world available for viewing. There is also a link to the list of all of the institutions on the main page.

Over 2 million articles and videos are available that will explain how to do almost anything on this website. “Professionals in every field come together to offer expert advice, backed by the additional support of a can-do eHow community (from their website).”
